Bar with its historic centre of Stari Bar is situated on the Adriatic coast of Montenegro, just below the Rumija mountains.

In the period from 1443 to 1571 Bar belonged to the Maritime Republic of Venice and was an important trading port on the coast and was home to an estimated 4,000 people. But through earthquakes and various wars, little of the city’spower and beauty survived.

1571 the Turks succeeded in capturing the harbour and the fortifications and the Turkish era lasted more than 300 years. This era left its mark, and the Islamic influence became prevalent to Bar.

In 1752, the imposing Sat Kula clock tower was built, which corresponds to the well-known patterned design of Turkish clock towers.

The aqueduct in front of the northern walls of the city fascinates visitors. This water conduit is a perfect example of the high level of Ottoman structural engineering art from the 18th century.

The Jovan-Vladimir church is the new landmark of the modern city of Bar, the largest and most modern orthodox building in Montenegro. The Adriatic port of Bar has completely changed, since tourism benevolantly replaced fishing and trade. With giant hotels now dominating the beaches.

And so this place with both its history and newer influences, has come back flourish and Bar has again survived.
