After being reconquered from the Moors in the 9th century, Burgos was transformed into a border fortress, and became the capital of the kingdom of Castile in the north of present-day Spain in 1037. A centre of prosperity and one of the main points of the Road to Santiago.

The Catedral De Santa Maria was started in 1221 and continued for three centuries. The Gothic towers, completed in the 15th century, reach 80 metres up into the sky. But the interior is even more fascinating. King Philipp the Second once described the house of God as the "work of angels". The Cathedral Of Burgos is also the final resting place of the remains of the conqueror of the Moors, "El Cid" and his wife Jimena.

The city's main square, the oval Plaza Mayor, is considered one of the most beautiful squares in Spain. A place where the history of the city remains alive.

Burgos is located almost 900 metres above sea level, with cold winters and hot summers.

On the western outskirts of the city is the abbey of Las Huelgas, whose nuns were, from the beginning, entrusted with the care of the nearby royal hospital. The Fortress Hill with its castle rises directly behind the Cathedral and the Old Town.

The local characteristics evolved with time. Asturian" became "Castilian and the language took on distinctive nuances.
