In the past four thousand years a spectacular natural wonder has been created along the extent of the Plitvice River in the border region of Croatia and Bosnia Herzegovina: deep blue and turquoise-green lakes, the Cascading Waters Of Plitvice.
For seven kilometres, sixteen lakes have formed in a gorge, like the links of a chain, connected by various cascades and waterfalls.
The sub-surface of the Dinaric Mountains consists mainly of water-permeable limestone. At first, rainwater disappears into the mountain and travels through its many subterranean labyrinths. In this way, over thousands of years, gorges and cave systems have gradually evolved.
A boat service became necessary due to the increasing number of visitors that have come here since 1979 when the Plitvice Lakes were designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
