Close to the Armenian capital of Jerewan, is the Geghard Monastery. Artistic cross-stones adorn a massive wall which surrounds the country’s most popular pilgrimage site. According to popular belief, it was founded by Gregory The Illuminator.

With its ancient churches, chapels, caves and graves, the monastery is a masterpiece of mediaeval Armenian architecture and is located in a place where in pre-Christian times there were both religious ceremonies and pagan worship.
